Crystal is the driving force behind GreenToGo, a reusable take-out container service, the founder of nonprofit group Don’t Waste Durham and a board member of Circular Triangle, a Chapel Hill, N.C.-based circular economy advocacy and education group.

Daunting numbers add up for single-use waste
As of Jan. 1, food service providers, including restaurants, institutional cafeterias and food delivery services can no longer automatically provide single-use service items with food orders or meals, and cannot bundle items together.

It’s not a ban on plastic forks, just a restriction. And it’s one of several in the state’s efforts to becoming less littered. A law passed by the Washington Legislature earlier this year will ask food businesses to include utensils, straws and condiment packages only upon customer request.
